The gut microbiome is an ecosystem of microorganisms living within the digestive tract. These microorganisms include bacteria, fungi, archaea, viruses and other microscopic organisms that interact with our diet, digestive environment and one another.

Because this ecosystem is complex, understanding gut health involves more than looking for a single “good” or “bad” bacterium. Who is Microba?

Microba is a microbiome science and testing company that has been conducting microbiome research and analysis since 2017. Its Microbiome Explorer testing platform uses metagenomic next-generation sequencing, often referred to as shotgun metagenomic sequencing, to analyse DNA collected from a stool sample.

Microba’s Australian laboratory is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities for Human Pathology under the ISO 15189 medical laboratory standard.

The company’s current Microbiome Explorer range includes different testing levels. Depending on the test selected, the report may include microbiome profiling, gastrointestinal health markers and pathogen or parasite screening.

Microba previously offered some of its testing under names including MetaXplore and Co-Biome. These products were brought together under the Microba and Microbiome Explorer names as part of a company-wide rebrand.

What is the gut microbiome?

The gut microbiome refers to the combined genetic material of the microorganisms living within the gastrointestinal tract.

These microorganisms form a dynamic ecosystem. They interact with the food we eat, including fibres, proteins, fats, polyphenols and other dietary compounds. They may also produce substances that researchers are studying in relation to digestion, immune activity, intestinal function and metabolic health.

However, microbiome science is still developing. Finding an association between a microorganism and a health condition does not necessarily mean that the organism caused the condition. Microbiome results must therefore be interpreted carefully and within the broader clinical picture.

A report should never be viewed as a standalone explanation for every symptom.

Why is gut health testing important?

Digestive symptoms can have many possible contributors. Two people experiencing bloating, constipation or irregular bowel movements may have different medical histories, dietary patterns, medication use and microbiome findings.

Symptoms alone do not always reveal what is occurring within the gastrointestinal environment.

Gut health testing may be important because it can provide objective information that helps a practitioner investigate questions such as:

A practitioner working in clinical nutrition may review the same information alongside food intake, fibre tolerance, meal patterns and nutritional adequacy.

The test becomes one piece of a broader assessment rather than the entire assessment.

What does Microba gut health testing examine?

Microba’s current Microbiome Explorer range is available at different levels. The most appropriate option depends on the patient’s symptoms, clinical history and the questions the practitioner is attempting to investigate.

Microbiome profiling

Microbiome Explorer Essentials uses metagenomic analysis to assess more than 28,000 microbial species within its reference catalogue, including bacteria, fungi and protists.

The microbiome section of the report may provide information about areas such as:

  • Microbial diversity

  • Microbial richness

  • Species detected in the sample

  • Relative abundance of different organisms

  • Microbial functional groups

  • The potential of the microbial community to produce or process certain substances

These findings describe characteristics of the sample collected at that particular point in time. They should not be interpreted as permanent features of a person’s gut.

Diet, medications, supplements, illness, travel, bowel habits and other factors may influence the microbiome.

Gastrointestinal health markers

Microbiome Explorer Extended includes microbiome profiling together with a selection of gastrointestinal markers.

Microba currently lists the following markers as part of the Extended test:

  • Faecal occult blood

  • Lactoferrin

  • Calprotectin

  • Secretory IgA

  • Pancreatic elastase

  • Zonulin-family peptides

These markers relate to different aspects of the gastrointestinal environment. However, no individual marker should be interpreted without considering the patient’s symptoms, medications, health history and other medical investigations.

An abnormal or unexpected result may require discussion with a GP, gastroenterologist or another appropriately qualified medical professional.

Pathogen and parasite screening

Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive includes microbiome profiling, gastrointestinal markers and pathogen and parasite detection panels.

It is important to understand that a laboratory panel can only report the organisms included within that panel and detected under its testing conditions. A result should not be interpreted as ruling out every possible infection, digestive condition or cause of symptoms.

How does Microba testing work?

The process begins with a practitioner determining whether gut health testing is appropriate and selecting the relevant test.

The patient then receives a home collection kit and follows the supplied instructions to collect a small stool sample. The sample is returned for laboratory processing, where microbial DNA is extracted, sequenced and analysed through Microba’s bioinformatics system.

Microba uses shotgun metagenomic sequencing, which analyses DNA within the stool sample and supports species-level microbiome profiling.

Once the analysis is complete, a report is provided for practitioner interpretation.

A proper interpretation should include more than simply reading which categories are marked high or low. The practitioner should consider:

  • The patient’s primary symptoms

  • Medical diagnoses and previous investigations

  • Current medications

  • Antibiotic history

A microbiome test has important limitations.

It cannot:

Is gut health testing the first step for everyone?

No.

Before arranging gut health testing, it is important to understand the person’s symptoms, medical history and previous investigations.

Medical assessment may need to take priority when symptoms are new, severe, worsening or otherwise concerning. Testing should not delay appropriate medical care.

For other patients, it may be more appropriate to begin by improving foundational areas such as:

  • Meal regularity

  • Fibre intake

  • Dietary variety

  • Hydration

  • Sleep

  • Stress management

  • Physical activity

  • Bowel habits
