Dealing with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)? Find Clarity Through Gut Health Testing

and uncover what may really be driving your symptoms

What Is SIBO and Why Does It Happen?

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, a condition where excess bacteria begin to build up in the small intestine. While bacteria naturally live throughout the digestive tract, they’re not meant to thrive in the small intestine.

When they do, it can interfere with how your body digests food, absorbs nutrients, and manages inflammation.

Scientific Validation

Research shows SIBO is a complex condition connected to wider gut imbalances. Looking at the whole microbiome is key to understanding recurring symptoms

What Can Contribute to SIBO?

SIBO There isn’t just one cause. SIBO can develop from multiple underlying issues, including:

  • Slow gut motility (often due to stress, medications, or previous infections

  • Food poisoning or bacterial infections

  • Structural problems like scar tissue or diverticula

  • Low stomach acid, which makes it easier for bacteria to grow

  • Poor bile or enzyme flow, affecting digestion and clearance

SIBO can arise after ongoing gut challenges, high stress, or repeated antibiotic use. That’s why it helps to explore what might be driving your symptoms.

Common SIBO Symptoms

SIBO is often linked with frustrating digestive symptoms that can interfere with daily life. Common issues people report include:

  • Persistent bloating, especially after meals

  • Excessive gas or burping

  • Abdominal discomfort or cramping

  • Diarrhea, constipation, or a mix of both

  • Fatigue and brain fog linked with poor digestion

  • Nutrient deficiencies over time if food isn’t absorbed properly

If these sound familiar, testing may be the next step. Many people find that their symptoms keep coming back after seeing different specialists, such as naturopaths or doctors, and the trial-and-error approach quickly becomes frustrating and expensive.

Types of SIBO

There are three main types of SIBO, based on the dominant gas produced by the bacteria in your gut:

Hydrogen-dominant SIBO

Usually linked to diarrhea and fast transit time.

Methane-dominant SIBO

More commonly causes constipation, bloating, and gas.

Hydrogen sulfide SIBO

May present with gas that has a sulfur (rotten egg) smell and more systemic symptoms.

Testing can help determine the type you have, which is important because different types often require different treatment plans.

SIBO Testing and Why It Matters

At The Gut Guy, we don’t guess. We work with functional testing (like a stool analysis) to help identify if SIBO is present and what else might be affecting your gut health.

By exploring the influences and patterns in your symptoms, we can create a plan that’s personalised to you, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

  • Why is everyone talking about gut health?
Gut health has become a hot topic due to increasing awareness of its significant role in overall well-being. Research suggests that a balanced gut may be linked to improved digestion, immune function, and even mental health. Here's why gut health is drawing more attention: Microbiome Importance: The gut hosts a diverse community of microorganisms known as the microbiome, which plays a vital role in processes like digestion and immune function. Connection to Physical Health: A healthy gut may support digestion and nutrient absorption, and could be associated with digestive comfort. Issues like bloating and constipation are often explored through the lens of gut health. Impact on Mental Health: There’s growing research on the gut-brain axis, which is believed to influence mood, stress levels, and cognitive function. Immune System Function: The gut is thought to support immune system function, with many immune cells residing in the gut. A healthy microbiome may help maintain this balance. Nutrient Absorption: The gut is essential for breaking down and absorbing nutrients from food, supporting overall nutritional health. Prevalence of Digestive Issues: As digestive issues like bloating and indigestion become more common, people are exploring gut health as a way to address these concerns. Research Advancements: Ongoing research into the relationship between gut health and overall wellness has fueled public interest. Lifestyle Factors: Modern diets, stress, and antibiotic use can affect gut balance, encouraging people to explore lifestyle changes that support gut health. Personalised Health Approach: With the rise of personalised health, people are exploring how their unique gut microbiome affects their individual wellness journey. Proactive Health Maintenance: Many people are adopting proactive habits, such as using probiotics, to help support a balanced gut.
  • How long does it take to get results?
The time it takes to see results in your gut health can vary widely from person to person. While some individuals may notice improvements within a few weeks, others may take longer, especially if they are dealing with more complex issues. It's important to understand that results are not guaranteed, and healing is a unique journey for everyone. Patience and consistency are key as you work towards better gut health. We're here to support you along the way!
  • How do I know if my health concerns are related to gut health?
Gut health can impact different areas of the body, so your concerns might be connected. Digestive issues like bloating or constipation are common signs, but things like fatigue or mood changes can also be related to gut health. A trained medical professional can help determine if your symptoms are linked to gut health and guide you on the next steps.
  • Do probiotics really work?
Probiotics can be helpful for some people in supporting gut health by adding beneficial bacteria. However, the effectiveness of probiotics can vary depending on the individual and the specific strains used. Since everyone's gut is unique, what works for one person might not work for another. For tailored advice, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional.
  • What types of clients usually seek out your services?
Clients who often reach out are typically those looking for a different perspective on their health. They generally fall into three groups: Individuals experiencing digestive issues such as bloating or constipation. People dealing with non-digestive symptoms like brain fog, low energy, or trouble sleeping. Those exploring alternative options for managing long-term conditions, often seeking support to complement existing treatments for concerns like anxiety, skin issues, or gut-related imbalances.
  • Will I need to keep coming back to The Gut Guy?
At The Gut Guy, our goal is to empower you with the tools and knowledge to support your own gut health long-term. While some clients may benefit from ongoing guidance and adjustments based on their progress, others may find that a few sessions are enough to get them on the right path. Ultimately, the frequency of visits depends on your individual needs and goals. It's always best to monitor how you feel and consult with your healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate level of support.
